Dumbest comment EVER!

I was at a baby shower last weekend, and a lady there said (and I quote), "I almost had twins, they were 23 months apart." I almost fell out of my chair. I commented back, "That's not quite twins. That's 2 years apart." DH said that I should have said something about two crawling, two who can't walk, can't talk, can't feed themselves, etc.....I was dumbfounded.

Yes, I get that same comment all the time.

Although, I just received a comment the other day that totally floored me. I overheard two of my supervisors talking and mentioning that one was an identical twin. So the noisy self that I am, asked the supervisor that was a twin about that. Then I mentioned that I also had twins and I showed him a picture of my babies. He then asked me if they were identical or fraternal and I said fraternal boy/girl. He then said and I quote "well that is what fraternal is silly." I was like no I don't think so. I then said "fraternal can be boy/boy or girl/girl." He looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language, he really had no clue.

Then at work today, I showed another supervisor the same picture of my twins and he said that our call center manager was a triplet. He then said she was an identical triplet and she had two brothers. I was like wait a minute she isn't identical, because one girl and two boys don't equal all identical.

I guess I am really finding out that the things I thought that were obvious really aren't.

How funny-I am really laughing b/c I hear this stuff all the time. I have b/g twins and always am asked "Are they identical?". Well-one has this little thing between his legs-hmmmm-figure it out.

And don't you hate when people say stuff like "Glad it's you and not me." I always want to say-for the babies sake, with your attitude, I am glad too!
I HATE THAT SAYING!!!!!!!! I love my babies and am glad it's me idiot!!

That is really too funny! I get a lot of "I have two kids that are a year apart. It's JUST LIKE HAVING TWINS!" They have no clue.

23 months apart and she thinks it's like twins???? I thought that was more like basic sibling age difference.

I will say, I know someone who is having their second baby 14 months after their first...and I don't envy her, I think it would be really tough. But nothing on earth is like having twins. (and I'm sure the triplet mommies out there are thinking, 'yeah, those twins moms think they have it hard!' lol!)

That is one of my pet peeves - I hear it all the time, "Oh,, my babies are so close in age it's just like twins" - yeah right sister - you think so!!

I have a co-worker whose wife had a single the same month I had the twins and he CONSTANTLY says "I'm SO glad we only had one" or "Glad YOU got the double duty - not me" or something else equally stupid - it's a true case of ignorance at it's best, he has no idea that his comments are hurtful or inappropriate. Other co-workers have even commented on how rude he is about it.

SO glad you started this thread! I have a cousin who has 2 boys 15 months apart (10 & 11 yrs old now) and asked how we were doing with the girls. I told him we were fine, the babies were a joy but a lot of work, and the comment back was something along the lines of "shut up and suck it up WE all did it" (said in a friendly joking fashion, not as harsh as it looks). When i commented that it was in fact NOT what they did he tried to explain to me how it was probably harder for them to have one one year old and one infant than it was for us twin mommies ... hmmmmmm ... don't think so!

Anyway, I've been sort of grumping about that for 3 months ... feels good to get it off my chest!

I'm glad it's not just me...I was starting to think I was crazy. I have b/g twins and people constantly ask me if they're identical. It makes me laugh.

And everyone wants to tell me their stories of how much harder it was for them to have their babies 1 year or so apart. It's not a competition. I'm sure they had a difficult time too, but it's not the same. I'm not saying that it's more difficult for me, but it is different.

Please remember that this happened in one week......

1) I was shopping and an older lady asked me if they were twins. I said yes. She looked at me...then my dh...then at them. Her face got twisted and honest to God she said "Are you sure? I mean, pardon my bluntness, but they don't look anything a like." I said "Yes, we were both there when they were born." She shook her head and mummbled "Babies having babies....what a shame." I am 28 and dh is 27. Our babies are 17 months.

2) I was at the doctors office. A little girl came up to me and asked about the twins. You know, names, who's older....all the things that little girls are interested in. Her mother was watching us for a while, because her and I were exchanging smiles across the room I knew it was her mom. The mother came over to claim her daughter and the little girl was like "Mommy, look at the babies. They are twins!" (soooo cute!) The mom said to her daughter "They aren't really twins honey, they are called Irish Twins." She went on to explain the difference. I let her ramble, make a foul of herself, so on. My heart was beating so fast...esp after the above comment. When she was done, I told her that although they were 2 lbs dif. in weight and looked different, that in fact they were twins. She looked at me with a poker straight face and said "I hope the family you babysit for pays you well. You sure have that script down well."

Now THAT was hysterical. My babies don't look anything alike either. I was in an Cafe the other day w/ my Sis. As we were leaving a waitress looked at both babies and asked "Are they identical" I said no. She said "Are you sure? Did they say they were not? I said YES I am sure. They for one look nothing alike. They were in seperate sachs, seperate placenta, . One baby had various medical problems. etc...She kept looking at me like I was crazy. My SIS finally spoke up and said " I think the MOM would know"..LOL

I usually have to restrain myself with some of the dumb comments I get from people in regards to my twins
But, MOMOFTWINS, I cannot BELIEVE how UGLY those two people were to you!!!!! I admire you for holding back from punching one of them in the nose!!! I do have a really dumb question though for you... what exactly are Irish Twins????? Never heard that one before....

Irish twins are when babies are born less than a year apart, it's actually a little bit of an ethnic slur as (Irish) Catholics are not supposed to practice anything besides "natural" birth control.

My all time favorite question was "ARE THEY FRATERNAL OR PATERNAL?"

Ummm....well they have a father...so...yes.

It's amazing how many people don't get that b/g can't be identical.

But for all the stupid comments there are so many people who say things like double blessings, you are so lucky, they are so beautiful, how special etc. One of those wipes out 5 ignorant remarks.

1. No, they're both girls
2. Yes, they look different
3. Yes, they're twins
4. No, they're fraternal, 2 different eggs, yadda-yadda-yadda
5. Yes, they have different personalities
6. Yes, they are a lot of work
7. Yes, we are having a lot of fun
8. I'm glad they're mine, and not yours, too!
9. People with triplets are as likely to appreciate advice from me as I was to receive it from parents of singletons (just no comparison)
10. I actually do feel scared for the lady who has 3 children under 3 yrs old.
11. Yes, I thank God every day that we were the lucky ones.
