Question How much do your identical twins look alike?

I'm just curious how much your MZ (identical) twins really do look like each other. My girls are almost 4-months old and they really don't look that much alike right now (at least to us). Lillie has more hair and Faith is quite a bit heavier...so it's really easy to tell them apart. However, if we put hats on our girls they are extremly difficult to tell who is who. Their faces are EXACT but it's their other features that makes it easy to tell.

For those of you who have older MZ twins...how long did it take for your little ones to start looking more alike? Or are they still very easy to tell apart?

My Dh and I have always felt our twins looked very different to us. Now when we look back at newborn pics we can't tell who was who . We both have noticed lately that although we can still tell them apart no problem they are looking more alike. The few people that know how to tell them apart have also noticed as they get older they are looking more alike. My Dh was talking to a woman of 3 yr old MZ twins and she said up until about 2-2 1/2 it was really easy for her and her DH to tell them apart but by age 3 it wasn't so...you may always be able to pick up the subtle differences or you may not but babies change so much the first 24 months I think it will be awhile yet! Congrats!

    Default Very much..

My twins look quite a bit alike...Aidan's a little bigger, and Nadia has a small hemangioma on the top of her head, but once she grows some hair that won't help to identify her..We have no problems telling them apart, but people who don't see them regularly can't tell. My dad has given up, and calls them 'the little one' and 'the big one'..very flattering

I was told mine are fraternal (no testing done yet). Born 8/23/02. I swear they are identical. There are minor differences- Brianna has one spock ear from the way she was laying in utero. She looks a little heavier but in fact is not. They have cow licks that are opposite. That is it. Everyone gets them mixed up and at times so do we. That's scarry. If you quickly look at them you cannot tell them apart. You actually have to look closely and of course their personalities are completely different.

    Hey Karen,

Good thread! I have identical twin sisters who are 18 and twin boys who are 6 weeks.

With my sisters, we could always tell them apart when they were little b/c one was always a little heavier than the other, but now looking back at their baby pix, its really tough. So, lesson learned, we label all of our little guys pix that go in their albums. My twin sisters, are very upset that we don't always know which one is which in their baby pix.

With my guys, I can definitely tell them apart, although others can't. Once again there's a pound difference b/t them. But, like wiht my sisters, their personalties are sooooo different even at 6 weeks, its even to the point that we can tell their cries apart 90% of the time.

Identical twins are so different from raising fraternal twins, (in my opinion) the issues they face are very unique.

I just can't imagine, being confused by people my whole life. My twin sisters can't wait to go away to college in the fall so they can be individuals for the first time in their lives.

My MZ girls are 15 mths old now, and the only difference is their weight. Taylor has always been a little heavier, and it really shows in their faces. This gives us the edge. But if they are in their snowsuits or running away from us we can't tell the difference.

Arlene - Both of my girls were born vaginally but Lillie - who was Baby A - does have a bit of a different shape to her head. We think it's because she was head down in my pelvis for so long with her sister's weight on her. It's already starting to even out though.

    Smile very much alike

    Hi,

My girls are almost 4 months and they are looking more and more alike. The two pound weight difference has shrunk to the 5 ounce weight difference and since little Olivia started getting chubby it's hard to tell. I think they have different smiles and different cries, but others are having a tough time telling them apart. With hats on it's hopeless.

Great thread. I was told my girls were identical but we can tell them apart. There are days when they look more alike but one has fatter cheeks, so that helps us. One was born vaginally and the other by c-section---so the one by c-section has a perfect shaped head. They are still bald, so we can still use that to help us out when we get stumped-LOL!!! Most of my friends and family members can tell them apart also---so I wonder---are they identical? I agree w/when they are older they will look more alike. They change a lot those first 24 months. I wonder what we will do later to tell them apart? It is so neat to have identicals.

Ours had different shaped heads (one was breach and one vertex) when they were born, but the difference is now almost nothing. Seth has an open pore that is visible right between his eyes. That's the easiest way to tell them apart right now. When they're side-by-side ... no problem. When you're holding one, and I never remember which one I'm holding, that's facing forward and someone asks "Who's this?" ... not so easy.

It took me 7 weeks before I could tell them apart. Now, I get confused every so often and laugh about it. They have slightly differant skull shapes due to torticollis of Frankie. But no one other than my hubby and I can tell them apart. Luckily, I found a birth mark on Charlie's arm when he was 7 weeks old so I will never get them permantly confused!!!! And their temperments are exactly the same!!! It really is fun!

How interesting to hear your comments! Thats why I like this site so much, you can feel so alone and yet we are not. My girls head shape is the only difference as well! One is rounder and slightly more hair and the other is thinner head (vacuum extraction). Otherwise their features are identical. We thought they were faternal while pregnant, they had their own placenta and sac. We had them tested after because of how identical they were and their test proved that they are identical!

Talking More and more every day!

At first there was a half-pound difference between them and Nat had more hair, but now at five and a half months, their hair and weight is just about equal and the babysitter & I are fooled almost every day.
Their smiles are different but they don't smile 100 percent of the time LOL!
Strangely, our best friends can always tell them apart, and my dh is better at it than I am!

our identical twins look SO different to me. i have been confused only twice since they were born. to me - they don't look alike at all. they have similar features, but their eye shape is definitely different. they have the same color eyes, hair, are always the same weight (except if one has been sick which riley has been sick and is 4 oz less than conner right now) and the same length.

my DH can never tell them apart. he is constantly guessing which one he is holding. riley had more hair at birth, so he always used that. but now - at 5 months - they are getting more hair so this method does not work for him anymore.

the doc sent the placenta to pathology to have it tested and they said the boys were definitely identical. but how accurate is this test? i think i will post this question on a new thread.

    interesting topic!

    Default Mine look different...

Here are clues: Same sex, same color hair, same blood type. On Ultrasound, only a very thin membrane separating them. It is possible, though, for fraternals to have two placentas that join together.

Mine looked different to me from the beginning, but now, when I look at baby pics, I can't tell who's who, so mark those photos!!

One of mine now wears glasses, so they look very different. The one with glasses has a little pink mark on his cheek, too. But, without the glasses and pink mark I could see where people would have difficulty. We ended up getting a DNA test, just to satisfy my curiosity!

Here's a pic of my gang...

I don't think that my girls look that much alike. I can definetly tell them apart. They do have times where they look like eachother and make the same faces:p but, one of them has more hair than the other, and the other has a somewhat chubbier face!! My husband can tell them apart and so can their grandma but as far as family members they don't have a clue!

    Very interesting thread!

My boys were in separate sacs, and I've had no testing done (just ordered the test from genetree.com per another thread on this site...), but no one, including my hubby and I, can tell them apart. They are exactly the same weight, height, head size, everything. If I don't color code them (ryan always wears red or a lighter color than Noah) no one has any idea which is which.

I'll be curious to see what kind of issues arise from the look alike twin thing, I wonder if girls are more interested in a different identity than boys. I have identical twin cousins, and they adore each other and still live next door to each other in their 50's. They had a double wedding in their 40's, I want mine to be like that!

we should try to find the most 'alike' pic of our twins and post them. I'd be curious to see others MZ twins.

Similar to lots of other people here, our boys main differences early were size, amount of hair and head shape. Now that they are 6 months, nearly identical in weight, I think they are looking more and more alike. To me, dh and grandparents, they are as different as night and day, but I've had so many people tell me they can't tell any differences.

Sometimes at night, dh still gets confused though.

My twins looked so different at first but at 4 months they are so similar!

The only real difference is the way their hair grows in the back but as soon as it gets longer that will be harder to see.

It is so fun to have identicals isn't it?
