I have identical 4.5 year old boys who have been in preschool three days a week for two years. Lately, my one son is becoming so clingy. He always wants me to hold him, doesn't want me to leave him (in school, with dad, with grandma, etc) and is also claiming that he can't do things by himself (can't get his shoes on, his clothes on, clean his toys, etc). It's driving me nuts! I get so fed up with his whining and holding on to my leg that I find myself trying to get away (which he can probably feel and is making his attachment that much worse). He is also being really stubborn about everything and refusing to stay in time outs when he is given them. Is this normal? It's been going on for almost 6 months now, how long will this last? Is it because he will be entering kindergarten in the fall? HELP!!!!

It sounds like he needs more attention right now; I would give it to him. Some extra TLC and "babying" right now might be what he needs to help him past this phase.

It will be easier for you in the long run to be careful not to be too irked by his clinginess and needing more help with things that he is capable of doing himself. More security and nurturing before the fall when he has to start school will help him feel more confident about being a big boy.

Good luck. :aww:
