My girls are 4, one of them has been crying that her teeth hurt (bottom) and I looked at them and the gums look kind of swollen. The pediatric dentist is closed today so I called MY dentist and they said it could be her adult teeth starting to come in . . . they've both had fevers for a week now and they said it could be a result of their teeth coming in and to use orajel until Monday. My dentist said he would see them even though he's not a pediatric dentist (they only do pediatric dentistry if it's an emergency). I thought that didn't happen till around five years old or after. Anyone go through this yet?

Hi!! I'm missed seeing you around here and have thought of you and your girls often!!
My girlfriend has twin girls that will be 5 in June and the one has already lost her first tooth and the adult tooth is 1/3 of the way up! She was concerned because the adult tooth was coming in and the baby one was still there and not fallen out yet!...it did loosen up enough though that my friend pulled it out!!
You are right though, it is usually around 5 when they start to become wiggly but it can happen before and our girls are in their 5th year technically!!!
Also, I HAVE to say that they have changed and grown sooooooo mcuh!!! they are beautiful!
How is school going for them? I thought I remembered you mentioning that there was some issues or something. My girls have finally just NOW adjusted! It has been a trying time for them and us with school and loss of naps etc.
They finally finally finally, ate their lunch at school on Jan 30th!!! They had been flatly refusing to eat or drink when they are there. Its suppose to be every day all day, but only send them fulldays Mon-Wed-Fri and halfdays Tues and Fri.
Nice to see you!
ehye hey hey....I just saw your edd!!! congrats!!!!

My DD had already had three cavities by four and had to have two filled and a root canal and crown put on the third one. She lost her first tooth around 4 1/2 -5 and just lost her very last baby tooth in December.
I used to joke about her teeth because as a baby she never got just one tooth, she always got two or more at one time....and it was the same when she lost them too. They always came out two at a time!
BTW, I can't believe how big your girls have gotten...very pretty too!
Could she have an infected molar? If her cheek swells it is infected and it will hurt like the dickens.
Does she have all her 2yr molars? My second son didn't get his two year molars until he was 4yo and one of them is still down there. He's 6yo now. I don't think it will ever come up. It is messing up the other teeth too :sigh:
He was also not in a very good mood when he got them :snicker:
Mine all lost their first teeth at 4.

My son lost his first tooth at 4. They can hurt if the adult teeth are hitting the nerves of the baby teeth. He also got his 6 yr molars right before he turned 5. So it CAN happen. Is it her bottom front teeth?

Thank you all for the replies and compliments on my girls. You all have beautiful children too and wow, everyone's getting so big! I haven't posted for a while. LOL.
Yes, I am expecting :D
And yes, it is her bottom front teeth. I may take them to the dentist on Monday though to make sure.
The girls are doing well in school. They adjusted immediately - the very first day. The issues with getting them in was that they were afraid they weren't at the right place in speech, but they took another speech eval and the evaluator called the school and told them that the girls were fine. So they got in! They have been doing well, except that they've missed the last 2 weeks of school, they got the flu last week, but they've still had fevers and coughs so I took them back to the doc and he said to keep them out of school for another week.
Well I'm hoping it is their adult teeth that are giving them fevers because I don't understand how they could be sick so long. I've been waiting on them hand and foot and I'm so exhausted, especially with morning sickness. ugh. I just don't want to accept it though, they're still my babies! I lost my first tooth at 5 and it was my top front tooth and because I was playing tug of war with my sister with our teeth, lol. And my adult tooth didn't come in for a while after I lost it. I actually don't remember it hurting at all. Oh well.
Thanks again ladies! We'll find out for sure on Monday (I hope).

Ahhh, I hope they are feeling better soon. I wouldn't think that having the new teeth/tooth coming up would cause any sort of fever. Perhaps the fever part is due to their flu still.
Were they on antibiotics for it?
Perhaps by Monday, it will all have resolved by then.
So, are you getting an u/s to see if its one or two?? I'm sure the girls will be tickled to have a baby in the house and just in time for Halloween dressup too!
I remember now, it was the speech you were mentioning....my memory is horrible. My girls were being followed for dysfluencies and it has been decided that they are rating pretty low right now on the scale and do not need any therapy. If I have any concerns in the meantime, I would call. Kalyna mostly has the dysfluencies...of repeating the same word or beginning sounds in a sentence...sometimes on more than one of the words in the sentence. But because it only happens a few times a day, its not that bad.
In the summer and fall, it was much worse. Both of them were having dysfluencies and even blocking a couple times a day and becoming agitated when that would happen. But it improved shortly after school started and so far they have NOT returned to that level.
My fingers are crossed that this will be outgrown like most are. That is awesome that your girls have no issue as well!
oops, I just remembered awhile ago when Kalyna was complaining of her teeth hurting and seemed to be the ones on the bottom and to the left side. The only thing our doc could see was another ear infection! So maybe have the doc check their ears? If they still have coughs and colds....they could be starting an ear infection and that would certainly explain the fevers.

My memory is real bad too, especially now! My first ultrasound is at 12 weeks. When I took them to the doctor the first time, they did have ear infections and they got a flu test. So they were on Omnicef for the ear infections and Motrin for fever reducer and pain reliever and Tamiflu. They didn't have congestion or a cough then. SO after the week and the medicine was done, they started having congestion and the cough and the fever came back. I took them back to the doc and they did a flu test again thinking that they got the second strain of the flu, but it came out negative and the doctor didn't know what it was. He prescribed them this cough medicine (on MONDAY) but the pharmacy STILL hasn't gotten it filled cuz they had to order it. We were supposed to get it yesterday.
I really hate seeing them like this. Now Kailyn's eye just started turning red today - btw, Fallyn was coughing so hard she busted a capillary in her eye and her eye looked so bad for a week. I'm just at my wits end - so exhausted. My room mates are cooking tonight so after I eat I'm sleeping.
Any way. That's really great that your girls are doing well in school and with their speech. Being around other kids who can speak better probably helps too. We went home for 2 weeks (milwaukee) and my 4 year old sister (almost 5) speaks WELL and I noticed that their speech improved tons just by hanging out with her. I'm glad school is working out and that they are finally eating their lunch! Our kids are growing too fast.

Oh man, your poor little ones and their coughs! There are so many things that can be a cough! With a fever, especially if its high enough to have to treat, than I would want their chests listened to to be sure they do not have a bronchitis or something along that line....eg pneumonia.
I'm not sure what that flu test is...but sometimes one dose of anitibiotics will not clear up the ears. Kalyna had back to back ear infection around Christmas time and after almost a week after finishing her medication she started with fever again....another ear infection but in the opposite ear this time around!
RSV is awful around this time...tends to be a cough a cough a cough!! Does not make the kids our age that sick usually though, just a persisitant cough.
Parapertussis starts with a cough that seems to drag on and eventually becomes worse as in becoming stronger and ending in a choke sometimes vomiting. Eventually its like they cannot catch their breath within that coughing spell and when they do, its like a 'whoop' sound as they breath in...very scary to see. Erythromycin works wonders for it, and even though they have been immunized for pertussis, this parapertussis is something they can still catch...its like a false whooping cough.
I would think that your doc would be wise to these though. Did he listen to their chests while breathing deeply?
I sure hope they are feeling better soon. I have heard that a tbsp of honey works the same as a cough syrup and even better actually. Unless of course the cough syrup has codiene in it!
That will be so exciting on your u/s day!! Are you wondering if its more than one?

My boys each lost two baby teeth at 4 yrs old. Now they are 5 1/2 and they have lost many more (I have lost count). I think it is 6-8 now. Our dentist said most children lose their first teeth between 4-6 yrs old. It freaked me out at first, too. I hope that is all it is. Good luck!
ps/ Your girls are SO adorable!

Actually Christina, it's not very common for kids to lose their teeth at 4. The "average" age range is actually 5-7 for the first tooth. If they haven't lost their first tooth by the time they are 7, the dentists are usually concerned.
I was told teeth are genetic on the mom's side. So if you got your teeth early, so would your child. ;)

Thank you all for your replies. I don't think I got my teeth early, I distinctly remember being 5 years old. Here's the weird part . . . I lived in the Philippines when that happened, I remember my aunt pulling out my front tooth, I could swear it was my top right front tooth. I found a school picture of me in Kindergarten and I still have all my baby teeth? WTHECK? lol.
Anyway, i thought it was between 5-7 that kids started losing their teeth. The girls are actually great and went to school today. They are still saying their teeth hurt though so I am making a dentist appointment for them tomorrow.
OH btw, I got a U/S because I had to go to the hospital for 3 days of vomiting. After 3 bags of IV fluid and some phenergan they did a U/S to make sure everything was okay - it's just one baby.

Congrats to you on the new baby...how exciting! Three days in the hospital...yuck! How are you feeling now?
I was going to see if you had taken the girls to the dentist, but probably not if you've been bedridden....
