One of my d/s has an outie belly button and wonderered if it is something that he might have to have surgery on. It seemed like it was going in, but then when he got his toddler belly it popped out again. Does anyone have any experience with a child who had surgery to correct this?

An outie belly button is a normal thing and does not need surgery. 3 of my kids have and outie, as does my husband. My niece had a bulge of something pushing out her belly button and the doctor said it would go down in time, just keep an eye on it over the next few months, and it did. So if it is an outie then it will stay that way and it won't be a problem. If it is enlarged or swollen, then I would make mention of it to my Pediatrician, but I wouldn't run to the ER or anything.

Both my boys had umbilical hernias.. we were told that if you were still able to push it in and it wasn't hard/hurting it wasn't a problem..

Both of my girls have an outie. Having surgery never crossed my mind.

All three of mine have an outie. I would never consider surgery unless it was a hernia and the ped advise us that surgery was necessary to correct.

One of mine has it too. Our pedi looked at it and said it's completely normal. Don't worry.

Both my boys have outies, especially with a full belly after dinner! Seriously, I think outie belly buttons are totally adorable.

My daughter has this as well. The doctor said it would prob. go away on its own within 3 years. It is better but still quite big. She has another year. I hope for her sake it keeps shrinking. It pokes out and shows through her clothes.

Thanks for your replies! I feel better knowing this isn't something to worry about. I guess I thought hernias always needed repair. I'll keep an eye on it though, and talk with out ped at the next visit.

Both of my boys have outies. I think it's cute. I've heard outies are small harmless belly button hernias. A belly button hernia can become very large (and maybe even dangerous) and that's when surgery is done. I quess, cause they're boys, it never bothered me..it's not like they're ever going to want their belly buttons pierced! However, Kelly Rippa has an outie that shows in tight clothes and she proudly shows it off.

LISA123, we had the same bathing suit!!!
My DD has an outie with hernia and the hernia seems to be shrinking, we were also told that if it doesnt go away by 3 it might need surgery!! I hope it does!! I know she will obviously still have an outie but hers is a little more prominent!

Hello everyone I was just reading this stuff about the Hernia thing and 2 of my girls have it. The oldest is still an outie shes 3, hers was the worst, and then one of my twins has it too, hers is still kinda big but has went way down! The doctor said that it is actually their intestines poking through a hole in their belly button, because I freaked out when hers was making a squishy sound when you poked it!!!But just like everyone else said, they said it would most likely go away by 3 and that most babies don't need any surgery or anything! I think that "outies" are cute too! I wanted my belly button to poke out when I was pregnant and it never did, just kinda went flat...lol!

My boy twin has an outie, also. The pediatrician said it was an umbilical hernia. It was exactly as you descirbed here when he was a newborn; very big and making a squishy sound because it is from the intestine. Ds's is much smaller now and no longer makes a squishy sound, but he still has an outie. I have not asked the doc about his since he was 8 months old. We were originally told that if it did not go in by age 5, he would need surgery to repair the hernia. I'm not sure if he has an actual umbilical hernia anymore.
