Hi,
I thought it would be helpful to post a list of items to keep in the house once the babies were born just in case you need them. If you need it at 2am you don't want to have to run to the store and get it.
Feel free to add to my list.
Disclaimer: Obviously you shouldn't give anything to the baby without checking with your pedi.
-infants mylicon
-pedilayte
-infants tylenol
-infants motrin
-orajel
-stage one prunes [for constipation]
-stage one bananas and applesauce [for diarrhea]
-saline drops

Benedryl Liquid -
Turned out my ds was allergic to eggs and I had to run to the pharmacy with both kids, Adam covered in hives, and buy this. Now I include it in my baby shower gifts!

Hi Jen~
Sorry I took so long to reply...
Yes - Children's Benedryl. You'll have to get a dose from the ped. Adam's dose was 1 tsp at the time, he was a year old then.
Now I realize maybe I should get an updated dose.... :o

Thanks Carrie. I did pick some up today, so I now have it in stock at home.
See I thought I'd be helping someone else out and I got help instead. :)

A good RELIABLE thermometer.
A "snot sucker" bulb.
Not an emergency item but make sure you have sharp nail clippers for those dangerous little nails that grow like weeds!

A good RELIABLE thermometer.
Yes, and don't forget the probe covers if you'll be doing rectal temps

Maalox and Aquaphor - used in 50/50 proportions makes a great diaper cream!

Here are my additions:
Diaper rash cream (Desitin, Aveno, Balmex, Johnson and Johnson or whatever)
Band Aids
Medicine Dropper
Ipecac (I think its spelled right)
I got the Johnson's baby relief kit from Wal-Mart for $29.97 that included the "snot sucker", mylicon drops, infant motrin, infant tylenol, balmex, vapor bath, and kaolectrolyte (just like pedialyte). It also comes in a lockable plastic storage case that is nice and roomy so whatever else that is medicine related that you buy fits in their perfectly. This little case is where I keep all the baby items that are medicine related.

They actually came out with recomendations this year not to use ipecac anymore. More danger of aspirating whatever it is into a lung I believe.
I will have to find the info on it.

Thanks Laurie for the info. I was just listing the additional items I had in my case for the babies.
(I got most of the medicine off of a medicine checklist I found this time last year.)
Anyway, I was doing some research and here are more items that might need to be kept as well:
Petroleum Jelly
Tweezers
Antibacterial Ointment
Rubbing Alcohol
cotton tipped swabs
calamine lotion or
liquid decongestant
baby safe insect repellent
baby safe sunscreen or block
**I got the above items off of a list at Walmart.com

Obviously some of the items above may or may not need to be purchased.

Our boys were six weeks early and I made everyone wash their hands as soon as they came in the house. So, I guess I would add anti-bacterial soap and hand sanitizer (even for the diaper bag). I was a freak about germs in those early days.

A digital rectal thermometer. This is great for constipation too! :)

What great suggestions...just thought I might add this in case anyone was interested. At my peds office they have been using this new type of thermometer....it's an Exergen temporal scanner. You just turn it on and scan across the forehead...no need to wake a sleeping child, fight with the ear thermometer, or rectal insertion. It reads the arterial temperature, which is a core temp with is supposed to be more accurate than ear, and as accurate as rectal. My peds nurse absolutely loves it so I got one and I love it too. They are a little expensive but it has been very worth it to me. I ordered mine online at drugstore.com (I think). You can do a search and find out more info if your interested.
Best wishes to everyone,
Andrea
