Hello everyone!
My husband and I found out we are expecting twins in Sept (17) 2004 - what a shocker! This was going to be our third (and last) baby... but now there will be four!
I have taken the sage advice of ladies on this board and bought the Barbara Luke book... it came yesterday and I was done reading it last night... and now I am terrified!!!
I am a petite 5'4" and pre-preg weight of 125#.... and as of today (10w 4d) I have not gained a single pound.... mainly due to all day nausea and frequent vomiting - which are a hallmark of pregnancy for me (had it with both of my other pregnancies).
If I am supposed to gain 24# by 20 weeks... how am I going to do that????
I already feel as if I am eating 24/7... some of it comes back up but most of it stays down.... I am eating steaks and eggs and good protein... along with Boost Plus drinks as in between snacks...
At my last US on the 16th, the babies were 9w 4d and 9w 2d... so exactly on track for size... and I AM starting to get a belly... but I am NOT gaining ANY WEIGHT!!!!!
I am absolutely terrified that I am starving them and this pregnancy will have all sorts of complications and the babies will be too small and too early (from what I read in the book that is what happens when you do not gain enough weight...)
Can someone please give me some tips or tricks to eat more/better or maybe just some reassurance or "this is what happened to me and my babies are fine" kind of thing...
I really am not comfortable with my current doctor/midwife so am still looking but the pickings are slim as far as MFM specialists in the area...
Thanks everyone for letting me ramble... I am quite freaked out about this!

I didn't gain weight at first either. I didn't gain much throughout the whole pregnancy either.
Your body is probably getting slimmer in other areas and using the food it does keep down for the baby.
I gave birth at 40 weeks to b/g twins, 7lb and 6lb 12oz.
I hear cantelope is good for nausea or any other melon that you like.
I was terrified when I found out it was twins. We were also going for number 3 and surprise. I think it was the fear of the unknown that gets you. I had done pregnancy before, I was ready just to sail through this one and then WAMM> not this time. This time is going to be just like the first time. I was nervous on and off until 32 weeks I think.
Best of luck, you will find lots of people glad to help here. Ask anything, someone will have an answer for you.

I didn't really gain any weight either at first. I had a little belly by 17 weeks. By the time I was 20 weeks, I was obviously pregnant and had gained about 10 pounds. By then end of 36 weeks when I delivered my 2 girls I had gained 36 pounds.
Once the nausea passes, you'll be able to eat more and feel better. Don't worry about starving them. Just be careful of your water intake. No matter what, you absolutely have to drink tons of water when you're pregnant with twins. I had lots of problems bcz I just couldn't seem to get enough fluids.
That's all the advice I have right now.
Congrats on your twin pregnancy and welcome to the board! :)

Hey there :)
I also have 2 children (boys) already and thought this would be our third and last baby. It will still be the last, but the third and fourth!!
I have lost 14 pounds since I found out I was pregnant. I am 13 weeks, 3d today. Like you, I'm trying as hard as I can to eat, but the thought of food makes me want to throw up. My doctor said that I'm probably losing because the babies are taking everything they need. I didn't lose this week, but I can relate to your struggle!!
I'm anxious for my next ultrasound so I can see that they are OK, I just pray hard and do the best I can...I think that's all you can do!

I started out with a pre-pregnancy weight of 112. I didn't gain a pound until sometime between the 13th and 14th week. I have been trying to gain like crazy but I have a fast metabolism so it's been a challenge (plus the extreme all-day sickness and food aversions of the first trimester). I'm now at 17 weeks and have gained 5 pounds (hopefully a little more since my weighing last week).
Even though I haven't gained a lot yet, my babies are huge monster babies and have been from the beginning so they are definitely taking what they need. At my 16 week, 2 day ultrasound, Baby A measured 16 weeks, 5 days big and Baby B measured 17 weeks, 1 day big! At 16 weeks, normally a baby should weigh 4.2 oz...both of my boys weighed 6 oz!
These babies have been growing so well though, I've been showing since the 10th week. At my last appointment they measured my uterus, and I was measuring the equivalent of someone 28 weeks pregnant!
I still continue to try to pack on the pounds, but to me the most important thing is that the babies continue to grow and thrive like they have been. Thus far for every ultrasound they have been measuring ahead of due date which gives me comfort that I'm doing something right.

g8rvet - I was the exact same size as you when I became pregnant with my twins. I gained 3 lbs in my first trimester and ended up with a 45 lb weight gain. 2 days after I delivered them at 37w3d I had lost 25 lbs!! It is too early to worry about weight gain right now. You will be fine!!! Once you start feeling better you will be able to eat a little more. Do not let the books scare you. You will be monitored very closely by your specialist (once you find one you like) and the babies will be fine! Try to drink lots of water if you can but not so much that it fills you up and you don't eat!! Congratulations and good luck!!

I also lost 10 lbs at first during my preg and really didnlt start to gain any till about 4 months. By the end i was obviously expecting twins...i gained about 40 lbs and was 5 ft 4 and 140 before getting preg.
But i remember drinking tons of milk and eating cereal to help gain weight for the babies. In the beg and up until about month 3 i couldn;t eat anything. I would go to dinner be so hungry when my food came i couldn;t eat it. I had the worst nausea ever. I'd be working and get hungry and id get sick. If i got extremly hungry i would get sick so i tried little snacks..there were many times i threw up in teh parking lot and in the bathroom at work but it does pass.

GINGER TEA! I discovered it at the end of my 1st trimester and it really worked. Buy fresh ginger root, shave or chop enough to make tea, add some brown sugar and steep in hot water. It didn't sound appetizing to me at first, but once I actually drank it, it went down ok. I also gave it to my co-worker who had some kind of weird flu-like thing that hit hit every few days or so. He drank the tea and never threw up again. He'd been vomiting for weeks! I'm going to remember it for the next time someone in my family has the flu. As far as the weight goes, I'm right on track, but then I've never had a problem gaining weight to begin with, so it's no surprise. I'm sure your babies are just fine. I'll be thinking of you.

I am somewhat more at ease now that I am feeling a bit better and am able to keep one or two meals down a day...
Still hunting on the new OB angle however... I have yet to find anyone I really like (old Dr. doesn't take out insurance anymore...) and the pickings are pretty slim it seems...
I don't want an alarmist-type practice that is overly conservative in their care standards, but then again I don't want someone that will just let whatever and whenever happen either... guess I am being overly picky????
I am a medical professional - and I really just want the same standard of care that I give to my patients... essentially I treat them as my own family - but that seems to be the rare practice these days!??!?!
Anyone have a good suggestion?
Thanks again!

Good luck finding a good OB. They are hard to find anywhere. Where are you in Florida? Maybe posting a message asking for others to help would get you some good names. There are quite a few FL people lingering on the boards. Oh, and maybe if there is a good hospital around you could call and ask for a referral. That is how I found my OB when I had to move to a new state at 30 weeks. The hospital person I talked to actually said she was only giving me the names of people she would send her own family members too. Those in the profession know how important it is to find a good OB with a multiple preg. By the way, I LOVED my new OB whereas my old one I could have cared less for.
