My cousin's baby did not put weight on at his last appointment...he has major spit up issues and is on zantac. ...thankfully he put on over a pound in 2 weeks, so that is good. Anyway. here is my question..my cousin mentioned to her doctor that she takes a bottle of refrigerated bm out of the fridge an hour or so before the feeding to help bring it to room temp so it will warm quicker in tap water...the dr told her that the milk would have gone sour, and that is why he has been spitting up..now she is blaming herself for her baby not gaining weight because of what the dr said....I never heard of anything like that and I did it with my boy's bottles...is that true? Also, it is winter and my cousin lives in Alaska...maybe that could make sense in the summer....

I always thought that it could say out for 2 hours at room temp. I will be honest - i have left mine out longer then that and the girls did not spit it up. i am not sure why the Dr. would day such a thing unless it was more like he was just trying to think of reasons for the spitting up and that was just one he thought of. I hope that your cousin doesn't beat herself up too much - especially since it is very unlikely to be the cause of the low weight gain.

i know..I feel bad for her...On my milk storage bags it says up to 7 hours between 66-72 degrees...I always left mine out..2 hours was max for me, but still...

I have left mine out for 7 hours alot and we are fine! Some dr's frustrate me!
ours will take the milk cold or warm..but they like the nipples warm...so we store the bottles in the fridge with out a nipple and then run the nipple under the hot water before giving it.

point blank, that doc is full of crap!!! and must not know much about bfing and reflux, and instead of saying "i don't know" he would rather blame the mom!! This infuriates me to no end!!!! Our NICU only ref the bm that we were going to store, they never refrig what the girls would get the next feed. They said their policy is that they can only leave it out for a max of 4 hours, but that it is really good for several more than that.
This doc reminds me of the first ped I took my son to. It took me a year to get brave enough to dump him and find someone who really knew what they were talking about, but was I ever glad when I finally did.
I was a member of la leche league for many many years, and the horror stories I could tell of ignorant docs and just as ignorant family members. GRRRR
Please pass along to mom that she is not doing anything wrong. Even warming in hot water kills off a few of the good things in bm, so leaving it to warm on its own, or just leaving it out for several hours is better. I would also try to talk her into finding a doc who knows his stuff. jmo, :) grandma Jodie
