I have been measuring large from my first visit. So at my first ultrasound, the tech said she only saw one, although I was still ahead of the doc.'s said due date. My next visit after, Doc. said I needed a blood test to check for down syndrome, that came back with a possibility but the Dr. said that twins could through this reading off. I now have another ultrasound scheduled for the 30th of this month, to be a more detailed one to check for twins or DS. I have been researching the net to see if my feelings and symptoms go with twins. I found this site and thought who better to help me than that of knowing twin mothers/fathers! Please help me I have two more weeks before I know for sure! I am experiencing low pressure which I had with my first two pregnacies but at the end, heavy discharge just started in last two weeks, and can't seem to hold my blatter very well, also I feel movement in the top and bottom of my stomache at the exact same time, the movements are much different than I remember from my first two. I am sooo much larger than ever in my first two for this far along. 3 different due dates so far and no for sure yet if it's twins so far looks like as soon as X-Mas, anyone who may help ease my mind for the next two weeks, would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Hi REady:

How far along were you at your first ultrasound? I have only ever been pregnant once and that was with my twins. I found out there were two at 5 weeks (we had done IVF). So, I wouldn't be much help as far as what is different between a singleton pregnancy and a twin one.

At 5 weeks the dr. saw two black spots. Then at my 8 week ultrasound you could definitely see two babies. My dr. said that sometimes one twin is absorbed into the uterus but that this would happen by the 10th week.

As far as the pressure - I too always felt a lot of pressure. As it turns out i had a funnelling cervix and ended up on bedrest.

Good luck to you!
Lisa

My first ultrasound was at 20 wks. by the measurement of the ultrasound. but by the Dr.'s dates only 16 wks. Congrats on your twins and thank you for your reply.

First, congrats.

I would think that they would be able to see twins by 16-20 weeks, but I am no expert and stranger things have happened than missing one...

I wanted to say about the blood test... I am assuming it was an AFP or Triple Screen Test.... those tests SUCK! Don't let it upset you too much. I had one with my DS, two years ago. After the labs came back, my OB said we tested at high-risk for Downs Syndrome and scheduled an immediate Level II ultrasound.

During the ultrasound, the Peri who administered the test saw additional Downs Syndrome markers (leg length was short relative to head size) and told us my baby had at least a 1:8 chance of having DS. He was not at all optimistic and said we should have an amnio... The next week was AWFUL as we waited for the results. The hidden blessing was that I spent the entire time researching DS and gained a much more positive outlook on the condition, but still...

Anyway, after what seemed like the longest week of my life, and certainly the hardest of my marriage, the amino came back. They wouldn't give us the results over the phone, which we thought was a bad omen... but it turned out that everything was fine with the baby's chromesomes.

Don't get too stressed about the Triple Screen tests. They are not perfect and there are TONS of reasons they can read false positive. For example, I was later told that they are generally not given to women over 35 because almost all would test positive! They cast a "wide net" for potential problems which are then screened out with other tests. The majority of "positives" are false positives, as is really isn't a pass-fail thing, just an indicator of elevated/potential risk.

Hope this helps. I know it is almost impossible not to worry, but until an u/s and/or amnio, there really isn't anything you can do. Try to stay calm until you have more knowlege.

Thank you Stephanie. That does make me feel better knowing that there are a lot of false-positive readings, and yes it is so hard waiting, not knowing for sure! I guess with all these symptoms and feelings in my body I'm having I guess the reason they seem so different is cause of not having them with my first two children. Today I called the Dr.'s office and was only able to talk with a nurse and I told her about the discharge and pressure and she said not to worry about the discharge, but the pressure she said to go to the emergancy room, I'm not too happy with that answer, she had no ideas, or anything, just well I'd go to the emergancy room. I just want to know, is my baby okay and is it one or two, now this worries me more. Thank you again for your insight.

I don't know why, but before I had my twins (before I found out it was twins) I started searching the internet for twin web sites. I just knew. It was different from my pregnancy with my daughter. I had miscarried twins and I was told it probably was not twins because it was so rare to be pregnant with twins more than once. However, seeing all of the people on the board with multiple sets, made me rethink that one. Anyway, you must think it is really possible, or you would not be looking too. I also did the thing where they would both move at the same time, or I would feel it on one side and then the other, but would not feel a baby move over to the other side. I knew there was no way, a baby could be that big that early. I found out at around 20 weeks. I had already told many in my familly that I wondered, I was wearing clothes that I did not need until much later in my prior pregnancy.
Good luck, and keep us posted. Congratz on being pregnant.

My first pregnancy was a single one and it was totally different than my pregnancy with the twins. First, I started popping out pretty early but firgured that was cause it was my second pregnancy (everyone told me I'd get bigger faster). Then, after I found out I was having twins I started feeling the pressure that I felt at the end of my first pregnancy. That worried me so I called the Dr. and he said that the pressure is very normal with twins. I also felt very heavy, like I was carrying a brick around my belly and I didn't feel that way with my single..and then of course I felt like I was going to die for about 2 months during the first trimester cause I was so nauseous (?spelling). Don't know if this helps you any but I definately felt different when I was pregnant with twins versus a single. I hope everything works out for you and good luck on the ultrasound!!

PS- Maybe you should go to the ER?!? Chances are they will do an ultrasound to make sure everything is ok and with any luck you will have your answer!

Go to the ER, they will do a quick ultrasound and end the constant worrying. That is where I found out there was two!

bumping this message up because we haven't heard from Karen in a bit. I think she was going to the ER. I've been thinking about her and wonder how she is.

Things have been very hectic around here, my mom moved out, I got the doctor to take me in for a visit rather than going to the ER! She said I wasn't having preterm labor signs, I just had some discharge and she gave me a script, although I still have to wait for my level 2 sono, which waiting for is just driving me bonkers. I thank you all for being concerened, it helps to have the positive feedback. I will let you all know what I find out after Tuesday, 30th. Thanks again.
